You and I

We were running in the winter
From this Western coal minetown
Said goodbye to everybody
Leaving here for work to find
Need no handouts, just a wage
A broken back, with worn-out shoes

Have a bible in my pocket
When the times get hard to go on
I will read a passage and pray
With the help of God on our side
We will learn to keep on moving
Cause to stop we will die

You and I will be together
Every step until forever
From the start we will pretend
To reach our dreams in the end

I was thinking we were sinking
Will we ever find our way
You were trying and defying
Wont give up no, not one day
Poverty is not without love
But resolved to improve oneself

Found a job in the Springtime
A factory on the South side of town
At the bustop in the morning
In the evening to take it back
Saving money every paycheck
three more weeks to buy a car

You and I will be together
Every step until forever
From the start we will pretend
To reach our dreams in the end
